Dreamscape: Monidipa Dasgupta's Vision of Urban-Nature Synergy

Monidipa Dasgupta's artistic perspective is a refreshing blend of urban and natural elements, steeped in heritage in a world dominated by concrete and technology. As an artist and accomplished graphic designer, Monidipa weaves intricate narratives through her compositions, merging the features of nature and the man-made world on the themes of identity, belonging, and coexistence.

An alumna from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, majoring in Graphic Design, Monidipa started her career at BEXIMCO Online (BOL) and later shifted to the fashion industry. She started a home-based boutique where she designed textiles for women's clothing and later worked as a fashion designer at Dressy Dale. Eventually, however, she could not resist the lure of her artistic roots. Her return to the canvas was explosive—she now combines textiles and geometric abstraction, printmaking, and digital technologies to produce vivid and evocative works.

Indigenous art, as nature's stylistic patterns, stimulates and drives her creativity. Her visual language expresses African motifs, Aboriginal dot works from Australia, and Indian folk styles such as Madhubani, Gond, and Warli. Monidipa's exploration of cultural continuity and humanity's ever-evolving connection with surroundings serves as the basis for distinguishing these art forms.

This ethos can be best highlighted through her most recent concept artwork, Dreamscape. "Dreamscape is the world of my imagination, where nature is forever beautiful, intact, and a refuge for truth," explains Monidipa. In this animation, she depicts her inner world alive: vines, leaves, and trees, which serve as not only decoration but also shelter, memory, and life. The triangle shape symbolizing a mountain conveys strength and permanence, whereas the chessboard pattern signifies human dominance and civilization. Monidipa questions the relationship with land identity in this mix of symbols, exploring how the urban identity can be deeply rooted in organic nature.

In 'Dreamscape,' Monidipa transcends the emotional and stylistic boundaries of character animation by intertwining the two aspects in a singular piece. Her works are not just visual spectacles; they are emotional journeys. To Monidipa, these dreams serve as a refuge. They do not culminate from her imagination alone; she also draws inspiration from reality. And this renders the emotional essence of her creation.
